1. What is the Award of Excellence for Comptrollership in the Public Sector?
The Award of Excellence for Comptrollership in the Public Sector was created to honour innovative thinking. It also celebrates examples of exemplary delivery of comptrollership/financial management services that have enabled the government to enhance its financial management performance and strengthen its accountability framework.

In its fourth year, the Award of Excellence for Comptrollership in the Public Sector includes two award categories: (1)Innovation , and (2) Financial Leadership (CFO). This year two awards will be granted in the Innovation category, one for a large department or agency and one for a small department or agency. In addition, consideration forms may be submitted for a Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, which is awarded at the discretion of the selection committee.

2. What is the CMA-CIPFA Lifetime Achievement Award?
The CMA-CIPFA Lifetime Achievement Award is given to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to financial management and/or comptrollership throughout their career. The award recognizes the contribution federal public sector employees make to the Government of Canada and the financial management profession as a whole.

3. Who is eligible to receive the awards?
To be eligible for the Innovation award, the nominee must be (1) a federal public servant or team working in a government department or agency, including Crown corporations, or (2) a retired federal public servant, who worked in a government department and/or agency, including Crown corporations, provided they retired less than one year prior to the deadline for receiving nominations. To be eligible for the Financial Leadership (CFO) award, the nominee must be a federal public servant in the role of Chief Financial Officer working in a government department or agency, including Crown corporations. NOTE: Elected officials and Order-in-Council appointees are not eligible.

4. What does it cost to submit a nomination?
There are no fees or charges associated with submitting a nomination for the Award of Excellence for Comptrollership in the Public Sector or the CMA-CIPFA Lifetime Achievement Award.

5. What is the process for nominating candidates and selecting the recipients?

6. Why should I submit a nomination?
The award recipients will receive national recognition of their achievements and their innovations will serve as a model for how other public sector entities and individuals can enhance their financial management performance and meet accountability objectives to the highest possible standards.

7. How do I submit a nomination?
After you have reviewed the eligibility requirements and award criteria, complete the appropriate application form (Innovation, Financial Leadership (CFO), and Lifetime Achievement). You may submit your nomination via email to nominations@comptrollershipaward.com or by mail (1 Robert Speck Parkway, Suite 1400, Mississauga, ON L4Z 3M3). Please note you can only submit one nomination per award category.

8. What is the deadline for all nominations?
The deadline for all nominations is Friday, February 17, 2012.
9. How will I know if my nomination has been received and processed?
Upon receipt of a completed nomination, the nominator will receive confirmation of receipt.

10. What will be done with all of the information I've submitted?
The information submitted as part of the award process will be collected and kept in the strictest of confidence.

11. Who will be judging the entries?
A distinguished panel of senior public servants and industry experts will review the nominations and select the recipients. Visit the Selection Committee page for more information.

12. What will the award recipients receive?
The recipients of the Award of Excellence for Comptrollership in the Public Sector will receive a plaque as well as a $1,000 contribution to a registered charity or scholarship fund of their choice. The recipient of the CMA-CIPFA Lifetime Achievement Award will receive a plaque. All of the winner’s accomplishments will be highlighted on the Comptrollership Award website and participating sponsors' sites (CMA Canada and CIPFA).

13. If I’m selected as an award recipient, will I be required to give a speech?
The award recipients will be given the opportunity to address the audience; however, you are not required to give an acceptance speech.

14. Where is the award ceremony taking place?
The award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at the Fairmont Château Laurier in Ottawa. The cocktail reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. The dinner and awards ceremony will start at 6:45 p.m.

15. Is there a connection between the CMA-PFA program and the Award of Excellence for Comptrollership in the Public Sector?
In 2005, CMA Canada partnered with U.K.-based Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA), to offer the CMA-PFA program to meet the unique needs of financial management in the public sector. More recently, CMA Canada and CIPFA are working together once again to sponsor the Award of Excellence for Comptrollership in the Public Sector, as a follow up on the establishment of their program.

16. Do I need to have a professional designation to be eligible for the awards?
No. Nominees do not need to hold a professional designation to be eligible.
